Pad Printing Guide

Precision printing for promotional items like pens, keyrings, and corporate gifts. Perfect for curved and irregular surfaces.

What is Pad Printing?

Pad printing is the most common method for branding promotional products likepens, keyrings, anddrinkware. It uses a silicone pad to transfer ink from an etched plate onto the product surface.

The flexible pad conforms to curved, irregular, or textured surfaces that other printing methods can't reach.

How It Works

  1. Plate creation: Your artwork is etched onto a metal or polymer plate
  2. Inking: The plate is flooded with ink, then wiped clean
  3. Transfer: A silicone pad picks up the ink from the etched areas
  4. Application: The pad presses onto the product, depositing ink

The silicone pad's flexibility is key - it can print on pen barrels, golf balls, bottle caps, and many other curved surfaces.

Best For

  • Curved surfaces: Pens, bottles, mugs
  • Small items: Keyrings, badges, USB drives
  • Textured surfaces: Golf balls, stress balls
  • High volume: Excellent for large quantity giveaways

Advantages

  • Works on curved and irregular surfaces
  • Very precise, fine detail reproduction
  • Fast production for high volumes
  • Multiple colours possible (multi-pad machines)
  • Cost-effective for large runs

Considerations

  • Limited print area size
  • Colours applied separately (multi-colour = multiple passes)
  • Setup required for each colour
  • Not suitable for large areas of solid coverage

Ideal Products

Print size: Pad print areas are typically small (30mm x 10mm for pens, for example). Keep your design simple and ensure any text is large enough to read clearly.

Colours & Finishes

Pad printing typically uses Pantone-matched inks. Special finishes available include:

  • Metallic inks (gold, silver)
  • White ink for dark products
  • UV-resistant inks for outdoor products
